22 MARCH 2024

How 25hours Hotels supports Viva con Agua in promoting access to clean drinking water

World Water Day, celebrated on 22 March each year, reminds us of the critical role that water plays in food, climate, health, biodiversity, and many other areas.

As early as 2010, the United Nations recognized the human right to water and sanitation. However, according to a WHO/UNICEF report published in 2023, 2.2 billion still live without safely managed drinking water, including 115 million people who drink surface water.

Water is vital to life. Between 55 and 60 per cent of the adult body is made of it, and under normal conditions, the human body can only survive three or four days without water. We need water to stay alive, yet there are billions of people all over the world who don’t have access to safe drinking water. In addition to improving and protecting people’s health, access to clean drinking water gives children the possibility of attending school permanently, empowers women, strengthens the local economies, and allows for a better future.

Since 2015, 25hours Hotels has supported Viva con Agua, an NGO promoting access to clean drinking water, sanitation, and hygiene worldwide, and currently has projects in Uganda, Ethiopia, South Africa and Nepal, among others. Driven by positive activism and much joy, Viva con Agua aim to enable local people to improve their living conditions in the long term through their motto “Water for All – All for Water”. All projects are based on the WASH (the abbreviation for WAter, Sanitation and Hygiene) triad – components that support the long-term and sustainable success of the individual project activities.

One of the organisation’s main projects now is One WASH in Uganda. The programme aims to increase access to safe drinking water, sanitation, and hygiene for around 50 communities in Karamoja and West Nile. Among these communities, proceeds from donations made during 25hours Hotels’ World Water Week campaign in 2023 have gone into financing four irrigation systems for the Gojua community. Located near the town of Yumbe, the Gojua community has limited access to clean drinking water. The installation of wells ensures that the people in the community have significantly improved health and, therefore, better basic conditions for a good life.

In 2022, 25hours Hotels raised over 33,000€ through their All for Water Week campaign, as well as an ongoing share of each online booking through the brand’s website. That year, the donation to Viva con Agua was channelled into water projects in Chitwan National Park in Nepal, where the majority of the population has secure access to drinking water, but access to basic sanitation is still a major challenge.

To mark World Water Day 2024, 25hours Hotels has once again launched World Water Week at its hotels. 1€ will be donated from the sale of their “All For Water” drinks in 25hours bars and the water flat rates in its restaurants. Additionally, a share of each online booking on 25hours-hotel.com will be donated, and events like free concerts in partnership with Viva con Agua will take place across 25hours’ properties. At the end of the year, the donation will be transferred to Viva con Agua to support the organization’s other projects in Uganda. 25hours Hotels is committed to supporting Viva con Agua in its mission to bring everyone the basic human rights of clean water and sanitation.
